About

Project Firefly is a web log about the trans-Pacific crossing of an electric auxiliary powered Ranger 33 sailboat. Captain Greg Martin is preparing to sail Firefly from San Diego, California to Okinawa, Japan in the first few months of 2013. The 6,810 NM voyage will consist of three legs, stopping in Hawaii and Guam before arriving in Okinawa before typhoon season starts in April 2013. The purpose of this voyage is two-fold: 1.) transport Firefly to Asia, where this awesome boat will be welcomed by the international sailing community in the wonderful Far East ports she'll soon call home and 2.) promote the concept of electric auxiliary sailing, demonstrating the advantages and dispelling the notion that these systems are best suited for short distances.

Many people have sailed great distances, even around the world with no engine, so the trans-Pacific cruise of a boat like Firefly, using auxiliary propulsion only to enter and leave port should not be remarkable... and that is exactly the point! Project Firefly is also not a solo cruise. Anyone is welcome to join as crew for a leg of the trip and to take an ASA sailing course in the process.
